5 Summer Foot Care Tips to Keep You Moving All Season Long

Summer means more time outdoors, more walking, and more time in sandals, but it can also bring unique challenges for your feet. Whether you’re heading to the beach, enjoying a family vacation, or spending weekends outside, these simple tips can help keep your feet healthy all summer long.

1. Choose Supportive Summer Footwear

Flip-flops may be convenient, but they often lack the support your feet need. Wearing unsupportive shoes for long periods can contribute to heel pain, arch pain, plantar fasciitis, and foot fatigue. Look for sandals with proper arch support and cushioning whenever possible.

2. Keep Feet Clean and Dry

Summer heat and humidity create the perfect environment for fungal infections like athlete’s foot. Wash your feet daily, dry thoroughly between your toes, and rotate your shoes to allow them to dry out between uses. Moisture-wicking socks can also help reduce excess moisture.

3. Avoid Going Barefoot

Walking barefoot may feel great, but it can increase your risk of cuts, splinters, burns, infections, and other injuries. Wear sandals, water shoes, or supportive footwear when at the pool, beach, campground, or outdoors.

4. Don’t Forget Sunscreen

Many people remember sunscreen for their face and shoulders but forget their feet. The tops of your feet are particularly vulnerable to sunburn and skin damage. Apply sunscreen to all exposed areas and reapply throughout the day if you’re spending time outdoors.

5. Don’t Ignore Foot Pain

Summer activities often mean more time on your feet. If you’re experiencing heel pain, arch pain, swelling, or discomfort that isn’t improving, don’t wait for it to worsen. Early treatment can often prevent a small problem from becoming a larger one.
